Cilantro is native to Southern Europe and was thought to have arrived in North America in the late 17th century. It is very small in size, averaging 5-7 centimeters in length, and has flat, broad leaves that are crisp, tender and have a sweet, bright citrusy aroma with robust notes of pepper and fresh cut grass. Nutritionally, cilantro contains vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, and phosphorus. As a matter of fact, some studies suggest that increasing consumption of plant foods like cilantro may decrease the risk of obesity, overall mortality, diabetes, and heart disease while promoting healthy skin and hair, increased energy, and overall lower weight. When it comes to the ways in which you can use these amazing leaves, just remember to use them in raw preparations, specifically as a garnish, as they will wilt if exposed to prolonged heat.
