Plantains are considered a major food staple in West and Central Africa, the Caribbean islands, Central America, and northern, coastal parts of South America. Even though there is no botanical distinction between bananas and plantains, the term "plantain" is loosely applied to any banana cultivar that is usually cooked before it is eaten. In addition, these fruits are low in fat and sodium with no cholesterol. However, they're high in carbohydrates and are a great source of potassium, magnesium, fiber and vitamin C, which in turn acts as an antioxidant and helps build up your immune system.
