Java plums are native to India and surrounding countries: Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They are basically berries with an oblong shape and a dark purple to almost black skin. As for the flesh, it is extremely juicy and has a flavor that combines sweet and tart with a slightly astringent aftertaste. As a matter of fact, the java plum fruit is used as a treatment in Ayurvedic medicine in India for a variety of ailments, like, for instance, anemia, digestive issues and respiratory infections. Besides, the rich, dark color of the berry is the result of anthocyanins in the skin, and this phytonutrient provides ample antioxidants.
