Description

The lemon fruit belongs to the Rutaceae family, which in turn is a home to other widely consumed fruits such as tangerine, grapefruit, and oranges. This small, ellipsoidal yellow fruit has a deceptive size as it houses many health benefiting nutrients, particularly Vitamin C, which in turn boosts our immune systems and protects us from numerous diseases. It basically provides 64% of the Daily Value in a 100 g serving (table), not to mention that it is used for culinary and non-culinary purposes throughout the world, which explains why everybody has it in their homes. This fruit might as well be called the “ubiquitous lifesaver”, which still wouldn’t do it justice! The origin of the lemon is unknown, though lemons are thought to have first grown in Assam (a region in northeast India), northern Burma or China. A genomic study of the lemon indicated it was a hybrid between bitter orange (sour orange) and citron.
