Melons originated in Africa or in the hot valleys of Southwest Asia, especially Iran and India, from where they gradually began to appear in Europe toward the end of the Western Roman Empire. They are large round fruits with sweet pulpy flesh that is usually served chilled as a refreshing summer snack. As a matter of fact, melons are a good source of Vitamin C which may protect against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. In addition, melons may help reduce blood pressure due to their high potassium and low sodium content.
