Description

The Nopales Cactus is native to Central Mexico where it has been growing wild since ancient times and was believed to have been used as a source of food over 9,000 years ago. As a matter of fact, nopales have been used in traditional medicine for disease treatment and prevention. Besides, the purported benefits of fresh nopal juice include lowering blood sugar, healing wounds, and lowering cholesterol. Even though these cactus pads are usually harvested young, they still have sharp spines across their entirety that need to be handled carefully and removed before cooking and consumption. Interestingly, the texture of Nopales is tender and slightly gelatinous with a tender toothsome crunch, which is why they can be very refreshing and beneficial when blended raw with pineapple, orange and parsley for a morning smoothie.
