New Zealand spinach was first introduced to the world in the 1700s by Captain Cook after exploring the coasts of New Zealand. This spinach is basically a bushy, fast-growing perennial with fuzzy, triangular, succulent leaves. Besides, it is low in calories and fat, but high in nutrients, which makes it ideal for adding bulk to your meals. For one, New Zealand spinach offers high quantities of vitamin A and C, and has a balance of calcium to phosphorous levels that makes it ideal for calcium absorption in the body. Low in protein, carbohydrates and calories, this spinach is also a great addition to a balanced diet. Like common spinach, New Zealand spinach can be used in a variety of applications; raw, sautéed, steamed, or braised.
