Native to Brazil and other countries in Northern South America, pitanga is a small ribbed berry, and varies in color from red to deep crimson to almost black depending on the variety and stage of maturity. When ripe, this fruit is soft to the touch, and is also tart and acidic with a taste similar to a green bell pepper. Nutritionally, pitangas are a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and phosphorus. They also contain the anthocyanin, which is a potent antioxidant that not only fights free radicals, but may also offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits.
