Persimmons are native to China, where they have been cultivated for centuries. These fruits range from glossy light yellow-orange to dark red-orange, when ripe, and vary in size from 1.5 to 9 cm in diameter, and in shape they can be spherical, acorn-, or pumpkin-shaped. Compared to apples, these fruits have higher levels of dietary fiber and some dietary minerals, not to mention that they also contain manganese and pro-vitamin A beta-carotene. Furthermore, Persimmons are an excellent source of powerful antioxidants like carotenoids and flavonoids. Diets rich in these compounds have been linked to a reduced risk of certain diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.
