Among the first tomatoes brought to Europe from Mexico by conquistador Hernan Cortez in the early 16th century were the huge beefsteaks. These tomatoes, aptly named for their large size and meaty texture, have a classic tomato flavor, although they can also be sweet to the taste. Nutritionally, Beefsteak tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C, as well as fiber. Besides, all tomatoes are also noted for containing the antioxidant compound lycopene, which may help protect against prostate cancer and heart disease.
