Created in 1961, the ‘Sunrise’ papaya has an elongated pear shape and a smooth leathery skin that turns a golden-orange color when ripe. Aside from the fact that this papaya has a firm, juicy flesh, it is actually sweeter than any other variety, and has an acidity that is lower than most. Besides, ‘Sunrise’ is an excellent source of beta carotene and vitamins A, C, E and K. It also has moderate amounts of folate, potassium and dietary fiber. A beneficial enzyme, papain, is also present in this variety, and is believed to aid digestion.
