Blood oranges may have originated in the southern Mediterranean, where they have been grown since the 18th century. These oranges were obviously named as such for their distinctive dark flesh color, which is due to the presence of anthocyanins. In fact, Blood oranges will definitely surprise you with their rich, ruby, almost blood-colored flesh underneath their thick orange skin. Besides, they have a unique flavor compared to other oranges, being distinctly raspberry-like. It is worth noting that due to its pigments, the blood orange contains greater amounts of antioxidants than other oranges. As a matter of fact, numerous studies have shown an association between anthocyanins’ high antioxidant activity and a decreased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
