Description

Endemic to Massachusetts, USA, this variety is one of the most popular grown in America, not to mention that its fruits start off bright red, then ripen to a deep purple-red that could easily be mistaken for black. High in Vitamin C, the Early Black cranberry can be made into pies and puddings, crushed and made into juice, or made into Cranberry. It's also perfect for the Christmas Turkey. In 1994, the Harvard Medical School published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association that suggested that regular consumption of cranberry juice would reduce the amount of infection causing bacteria in the bladder. In 1998, researchers from Rutgers University further identified the compound in cranberries that prevented bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. Researchers from Tel Aviv University found the same compound also reduces oral bacteria, the cause of dental plaque and gum disease. Those benefits are not always realized in processed products.
