Grown along the California coast, Sangria artichoke is a purple vegetable that was introduced in 2013. It has a pointed shape, with deep maroon, meaty leaves, along with a nutty and earthy artichoke flavor. As a matter of fact, the purple color of this artichoke is due to the presence of anthocyanins, which are phytonutrients present in the plant. Anthocyanins are actually said to help reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. They are also said to protect the brain as it ages.
