Originated in England around 1885 and introduced as a semi-savoy variety, Red Savoy Deadon cabbages are known for their large, boldly colored crinkly outer leaves. While the outer leaves of these cabbages are dark and magenta, their inner leaves are a bright pale green and are tender, yet crisp. Besides, these cabbages have a sweet, mild flavor that is also made better after an exposure to frost. Nutrition-wise, Red Savoys are a good source of vitamins C, E and K, as well as B-complex vitamins. They are also rich in dietary fiber and have antioxidant properties thanks to the deep purple pigments that contain anthocyanin.
