Round carrots are believed to be native to Europe, specifically France, and were originally cultivated for their round size and faster growth habits than elongated classic varieties. Aside from the fact that these carrots are distinguished by their roughly globular shape and petite size, their pumpkin orange skin encases a nearly coreless orange flesh that is sweet and firm, albeit a bit dry. These carrots contain the pigments known as carotenoids and flavonoids, which happen to be two important phytochemicals found in plant foods that provide several antioxidant benefits and defenses against cancer. They also provide the highest source of Vitamin A of all vegetables. This particular vitamin actually helps prevent vision loss.
