Native to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, Peruvian Apple Cactus fruit is relatively smooth with sparse but coarse spines that cover its deeply convoluted gray-green exterior. Nutrition-wise, all varieties of cactus fruit have a unique composition of nutrients, including high levels of vitamin C, B-family vitamins, magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper, and dietary fiber. Besides, Peruvian Apple Cactus fruit is strikingly similar looking to Dragon Fruits, but lacks the leafy scale-like structure and is instead completely smooth and spherical. In addition, its magenta-red skin will split open when ripe to reveal a white fleshy interior speckled with tiny black seeds like those of a kiwi. As a matter of fact, the texture of Peruvian Apple Cactus has been likened to shaved ice, crunchy and juicy, with a subtle tartness and a floral sweetness similar to sugarcane, which is why it is best enjoyed raw.
