There are several theories on the origin of the Bergamotto lemons. One theory, however, says that this fruit was discovered by Christopher Columbus while in the Canary Islands. Bergamotto lemons are distinguished by their round, large shape, thin aromatic green skin and also by their bitter, acidic juice. Like other citrus varieties, these lemons contain high levels of vitamin C, potassium, vitamins B1, B2 and A. However, the Bergamotto lemons from Calabria are unique in their nutritional benefits, considering the citrus grown in this region has a unique concentration and quantity of polyphenols, which are antioxidant compounds that help promote good blood pressure, protect against dementia, reduce inflammation, and work to help prevent cell damage from the sun and free radicals.
