Native to northeastern India, Chocolate Ghost chile peppers are very dark brown peppers, growing 5 to 8 centimeters long. They actually take a bit longer to ripen on the plant, though, and are typically picked once the skin turns a dark, chocolate brown. As a matter of fact, these intensely hot peppers have a reported range of 375,000 to 2 million Scoville heat units, not to mention that their effect can last more than 30 minutes! So, you ought to remind yourself of this fact before you taste them! These peppers contain high amounts of vitamin C and vitamin A, along with a moderate amount of folate and a considerable amount of the compound capsaicin, which in turn triggers the release of the endorphins in the body, and is a known cancer-fighter. It is worth noting that a tiny bit of this pepper goes a long way, so you should just use a small portion of it in your recipes without having to worry about not getting enough spiciness in them.
