Distributed throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, the African mangosteen is ovoid-globose in shape, orange to reddish in color, with acid sweet pulp that can be eaten either raw or cooked. There's actually some evidence that suggests that applying mangosteen extract to the skin may help treat acne, not to mention that researchers found that this fruit may help boost the immune system. Low in calories and high in fiber, mangosteen also has lots of essential nutrients, but no saturated fats or cholesterol. Besides, the potassium content in this fruit helps control heart rate and regulates blood pressure, which in turn aids in stroke and coronary heart disease prevention.
