Native to north-eastern tropical Africa, Teasel gourds are small to medium in size, oblong to oval in shape with a skin that ranges in color from bright green to yellow. Besides, their flesh is crisp and watery, not to mention that it is juicy with a pleasantly bitter flavor, similar to bitter melon but with lighter astringent notes. Teasel gourds contain some vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. As a matter of fact, the high levels of magnesium in edible gourds, such as Teasel, can help protect against the formation of gallstones by producing specific enzymes. Besides, the antioxidant components in gourds, such as beta-carotene, also aid in protecting against gallstones.
