Description

Since the mid-18th century, Satsuma-imo has been a favorite meal in Japan and was the predominant crop that saved many regions from famine during the Edo period. These sweet potatoes contain fiber, thiamin, vitamins A and C, and trace amounts of protein. The health benefits of sweet potatoes in general include their ability to help in healthy weight gain, boost immunity, regulate digestion, attenuate the symptoms of asthma and bronchitis, and control diabetes. Besides, Satsuma-imo is small to medium in size and has a firm, dense flesh that develops a drier, starchier texture when cooked. In addition, this variety offers a nutty, slightly floral flavor with hints of chestnut and caramel, and for this reason it is best suited for cooked applications such as roasting, baking, boiling, stir-frying, and steaming.
