Black turmeric is actually a rare herb, native to northeastern and central India where it has been part of cultural ceremonies and medicinal remedies. This turmeric’s main stem, or rhizome, may have smaller rhizomes branching out. Plus, the outer part of the rhizome is a light brown, with rough areas. As for the flesh, it has a bluish-purple color and a pungent, camphor-like smell. As a matter of fact, Black turmeric contains the highest concentrations of curcumin of any plant species, and is considered a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Besides, the root has been used medicinally for centuries to treat arthritis, asthma, and epilepsy.
