Description

Patented in 1971, Amikacin is an antibiotic used for a number of bacterial infections, including joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, and urinary tract infections. In addition, Amikacin is also used for the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Basically, this antibiotic binds to components of bacteria that produce important bacterial proteins, blocking protein synthesis which eventually leads to stopping further bacterial growth. As far as its side effects are concerned, Amikacin can cause hearing loss, balance problems, and kidney problems. Other side effects include paralysis, resulting in the inability to breathe, not to mention that it may cause permanent deafness in the baby, if used during pregnancy.
