Atropine is used to treat certain types of nerve agent and pesticide poisonings as well as some types of slow heart rate. Plus, it is also used to decrease saliva production during surgery. Even though Atropine occurs naturally in a number of plants of the nightshade family, the name “atropine” itself was coined in the 19th century, when pure extracts from one of the Nightshade plants were first made. As for Atropine’s common side effects, they include the following: a dry mouth, large pupils, urinary retention, constipation, and a fast heart rate. Furthermore, this medication should generally not be used in people with angle closure glaucoma. It is worth noting that it has not been established yet if the use of atropine during pregnancy is safe
