Betamethasone, which was patented in 1958, is a steroid medication used for a number of diseases including rheumatic disorders, skin diseases, allergic conditions and preterm labor to speed the development of the baby's lungs, among others. Basically, this medication is used as a topical cream to relieve skin irritation, such as itching and flaking from eczema. Additionally, it is also used prior to delivery of a preterm baby to help prepare the lungs for breathing. It is worth noting that prolonged use of Betamethasone on extensive areas of skin may on rare occasions result in a decrease in the production of natural hormones by the adrenal glands. Besides, the other side effects of this medication include an increased risk of infection, muscle weakness, severe allergic reactions, and psychosis. Furthermore, stopping it suddenly following long-term use may actually be dangerous. Remember to ask your doctor if it is safe for you to take Betamethasone during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
