Patented in 1978, ceftazidime is an antibiotic useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections by interfering with the bacteria’s cell wall. It is worth noting that this drug treats lower respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract, blood-stream, joint, and abdominal infections, and meningitis. Besides, Ceftazidime is generally well-tolerated. However, when it comes to its side effects, they are most commonly local effects from the intravenous line site, allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal symptoms. These allergic reactions may include itching, rash, and fever. There are however, other allergic reactions that are rare, albeit a tad more serious than the previously mentioned ones such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and erythema multiforme. Now, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you can use ceftazidime, considering it is relatively safe for you and your baby.
