Patented in 1967, Cefazolin is an antibiotic used for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections, such as cellulitis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, endocarditis and joint infection. Cefazolin can also be used peri-operatively to prevent infections post-surgery, and is often the preferred drug for surgical prophylaxis. It is worth noting that this medication is bactericidal, meaning it kills the bacteria rather than inhibiting their growth. You should, nonetheless, get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).
