Cefotaxime, which was discovered in 1976, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections, especially joint infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, meningitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, sepsis and gonorrhea. This drug works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls, which in turn are vital for their survival. Basically, Cefotaxime impairs the bonds that hold the bacterial cell wall together, therefore killing the bacteria by allowing holes to appear in their cell walls. As for the side effects of this antibiotic, they include the following nausea, allergic reactions, and inflammation at the site of injection. It is worth noting that Cefotaxime is not recommended in people who have had previous anaphylaxis to penicillin. However, this drug is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
