Ceftazidime/avibactam is a combination medication that was approved for medical use in the United States and Europe in 2015. Plus, it is used to treat complicated intra abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, and pneumonia. Basically, Ceftazidime works by interfering with the building of the bacterial cell wall, whereas avibactam works by preventing ceftazidime's breakdown. It is worth noting that the combination of ceftazidime and avibactam injection comes as a powder to be added to fluid and injected intravenously (into a vein). It is usually infused intravenously over a period of 2 hours every 8 hours. Of course, the length of your treatment depends on your general health, the type of infection you have and how well you respond to the medication. As for the side effects, they include nausea, fever, liver problems, headache, trouble sleeping, and pain at the site of injection. There are also serious side effects that need to be taken into consideration, namely anaphylaxis and seizures.
