Ciprofloxacin, which was patented in 1980 and introduced in 1987, is an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections, including bone and joint infections, intra abdominal infections, certain type of infectious diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, skin infections, typhoid fever, and urinary tract infections, among others. It is worth noting that Ciprofloxacin kills bacteria by stopping a bacterial enzyme called DNA-gyrase from working. This enzyme is involved in replicating and repairing the DNA of the bacteria. So, by stopping it from working, the bacteria can't repair themselves or reproduce. This, of course, kills the bacteria and clears up the infection. As for the side effects of Ciprofloxacin, they include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and rash. As a matter of fact, this medicine has severe side effects that need to be taken into consideration, including an increased risk of tendon rupture, hallucinations, and nerve damage. However, Ciprofloxacin appears to be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
