Description

Patented in 1981, Fluconazole is an antifungal medication used for a number of fungal infections, including candidiasis, blastomycosis, coccidiodomycosis, among others. It is also used to prevent candidiasis in those who are at high risk such as following organ transplantation, low birth weight babies, and those with low blood neutrophil counts. As for its mechanism of action, Fluconazole works by blocking the ability of the fungi Candida and Cryptococcus to reproduce. For people with infections from these fungi, this drug helps to get rid of the infection. It is worth noting that this medication can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and increased liver enzymes. It also has other side effects that are deemed serious such as liver problems and seizures. Bear in mind that Fluconazole may also increase the risk of miscarriage during pregnancy, while large doses may cause birth defects. So, it’s definitely not safe for pregnant women. Fluconazole comes as a tablet and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. Plus, it is usually taken once a day, with or without food. You may need to take only one dose of fluconazole, or you may need to take fluconazole for several weeks or longer.
