Guaifenesin, which has been used medically since at least 1933, is a medication used to try to help with coughing up thick mucus. It is believed to work by making airway secretions more liquid. Besides, Guaifenesin is sometimes combined with cough suppressants and ephedrine for symptomatic relief of asthma. It is unclear, though, if it decreases coughing. However, you need to remember that you should not give this medication to your child if he/she is less than 6 years old. When it comes to its side effects, Guaifenesin may cause dizziness, sleepiness, skin rash, and nausea. While it has not been properly studied in pregnancy, this medication appears to be safe.
