Ergotamine Tartrate is used to treat or prevent certain types of headaches (vascular headaches, including migraine and cluster headaches). In fact, the use of ergotamine tartrate for the prophylactic treatment of cluster headache was first reported in 1947. Besides, Ergotamine was widely used as the first-choice prophylaxis until the efficacy of lithium and verapamil became evident. It is worth noting that headache pain can sometimes be caused by widened blood vessels in the head. So, Ergotamine works by narrowing these widened blood vessels. Bear in mind that Ergot alkaloids, such as ergotamine-tartrate are helpful in many cases, yet they are also contraindicated in uncontrolled hypertension or during pregnancy because of their ability to disrupt fetal blood supply, which can lead to fetal damage or death. Ergotamine-tartrate can also produce uterine contractions and perfusion disturbances in the placenta. Plus, ergotamine should be avoided in patients with coronary artery disease, vasospastic angina and other vascular diseases.
