Description

Norgestimate was approved in combination with estradiol for use in menopausal hormone therapy in 1999. This combination is typically used in hormonal contraception and in menopausal hormone therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. It is used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness), which are caused by the body making less estrogen. Besides, the progestin in this medication helps to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus which can be caused by using estrogen. Bear in mind that women who have had their uterus removed do not need the progestin and therefore should not use this combination medication. Additionally, Norgestimate and Norgestimate may also be used by women after menopause to prevent bone loss (osteoporosis). However, there are other medications that are also effective in preventing bone loss and may be safer. So, it’s preferable that your doctor prescribes one of them for you. It is worth noting that the side effects associated with the combination of estradiol and norgestimate in postmenopausal women include headache, upper respiratory tract infection, breast pain, back pain, abdominal pain, flu-like symptoms, arthralgia, vaginal bleeding, dysmenorrhea, sinusitis, vaginitis, fatigue, pain, nausea, viral infection, flatulence, tooth disorder, depression, and coughing.
