Olanzapine/fluoxetine was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat the depressive episodes of bipolar I disorder in 2003. This drug is a single capsule containing the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine. Of course, all medicines may cause side effects in some patients. As for the side effects caused by Olanzapine/fluoxetine, they may include severe allergic reactions, strokes and “mini strokes”, high blood sugar or diabetes, impaired judgments and motor skills, among others. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant during Olanzapine/fluoxetine therapy. Besides, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
