Patented in 1981, Fluconazole is an antifungal medication used for a number of fungal infections, including candidiasis, blastomycosis and coccidiodomycosis. It is also used to prevent candidiasis in those who are at high risk such as following organ transplantation, low birth weight babies, and those with low blood neutrophil counts. What this drug basically does is block the ability of the fungi Candida and Cryptococcus to reproduce, thereby ridding the body of the infections caused by these fungi. As far as the side effects of Fluconazole are concerned, they actually include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and increased liver enzymes. Besides, this drug has other side effects that are rather serious such as liver problems and seizures. Bear in mind that during pregnancy, Fluconazole may increase the risk of miscarriage while large doses may cause birth defects. Therefore, you should not use it if you are pregnant. Also remember that this medication can be taken at any time of day, and can be taken either before or after a meal. Simply swallow the capsule with a drink of water.
