Gentamicin sulfate ophthalmic is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections (such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis) of the eye and the skin around the eyes (such as eyelids). It is also used to prevent infection after eye injury or surgery. Even though many people using this medication do not usually have serious side effects, eye stinging, burning or redness, or even temporary blurred vision may occasionally occur. So, if any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Bear in mind that the use of Gentamicin sulfate ophthalmic for prolonged or repeated periods may result in other types of eye infections, including fungal infections. Therefore, you must stop using this medication and contact your doctor if you notice new or worsening eye symptoms such as pain, swelling, thick discharge or pus. Also remember that during pregnancy, Gentamicin sulfate ophthalmic should be used only when prescribed. Besides, this drug may pass into breast milk, which is why you need to contact your doctor before breastfeeding just to make sure that your baby won’t be affected.
