Approved for medical use in 1960, Tropicamide is a medication used to dilate the pupil and help with examination of the eye. In fact, it is specifically used to help examine the back of the eye. Applied as eye drops, Tropicamide basically acts by blocking the responses of the iris sphincter muscle to the iris and ciliary muscles to cholinergic stimulation, producing dilation of the pupil and paralysis of the ciliary muscle. As for its side effects, they include blurry vision, increased intraocular pressure, and sensitivity to light. This medication also has other side effects that are quite rare, albeit severe such as psychosis, particularly in children. It is, however, unclear if using Tropicamide during pregnancy is safe for the baby. Therefore, you must not use it without consulting your doctor first.
