Bimatoprost ophthalmic, which is sold under the trade name “Lumigan”, was approved for medical use in 2001. This medication is indicated for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension, which in turn is a condition that causes increased pressure in the eye. Bimatoprost, which comes as a solution to instill in the eye, “lowers pressure in the eye by increasing the flow of natural eye fluids out of it” (quoted from medlineplus.gov). In order to make sure that this treatment will be safe for you, make sure you tell your doctor if you have ever had swelling or infection in your eye, or if you’ve ever had retinal detachment. Also make sure you tell him/her that you’re pregnant or that you plan to conceive prior to using Bimatoprost, because it is still not clear whether this medication harms an unborn baby. Bear in mind that using Bimatoprost ophthalmic may result in a gradual change in the color of your eyes or eyelids and lashes. Plus, this change may actually be permanent even after you finish your treatment. As for the other side effects, they include signs of infection, vision changes, and itchy eyelids. Remember to stop using this medicine as soon as one of these side effects occurs.
