Comfrey is a perennial plant that has been cultivated in Asia and Europe for centuries. This gorgeous, flowering plant has also been used both as a vegetable and as an herbal medicine. According to drugs.com, Comfrey has been used topically to treat “inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, gout, and thrombophlebitis”. Plus, it has also been used internally to treat diarrhea. In fact, this plant has also been claimed to cure gastric ulcers and hemorrhoids, and “to suppress bronchial congestion and inflammation”. It is, however, worth noting that therapeutic use of comfrey is quite limited because of its toxicity. Besides, the oral administration of this plant is not recommended because it might cause liver damage due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloids. People with hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to the plant should also avoid using it. Also remember that you should not use comfrey if you’re pregnant or if you’re breastfeeding. And if you have liver or kidney disease, staying away from the plant in question is definitely recommended.
