Description

Cysteamine, which is sold under several other names such as Cystaran, lowers the amount of Cystine in patients with Cystinosis. For those who have never heard of this medical condition before, it is “a rare genetic disorder that causes an accumulation of the amino acid cystine within cells, forming crystals that can build up and damage the cells. These crystals negatively affect many systems in the body, especially the kidneys and eyes” (Wikipedia.com) Before using this drug, you need to tell your doctor if you have other medical conditions that might make Cysteamine unsafe for you, particularly if you have stomach ulcer, liver disease, depression, or seizure disorder. Bear in mind that Cysteamine causes drowsiness, rash, headache, fever, and stomach pain, among others. It may also cause bone pain, unusual bruising, and increased thirst/urination – All of which should not be ignored. It is worth noting that using Cysteamine while breastfeeding is not recommended. And even though it is still not known whether it can harm an unborn baby, consulting a doctor before using this treatment is the safest option for you and your baby. On a side note, Cysteamine works best if you take it on an empty stomach, or after eating a small amount of food.
