Marketed as Fragmin, Dalteparin is an anticoagulant that “helps prevent the formation of blood clots”. According to drugs.com, it is also used in combination with aspirin to prevent blood vessel complications in people with certain types of chest pain or heart attack. In addition, Dalteparin is indicated for the prevention of “deep vein thrombosis (DVT)”, which is a type of blood clot that can occur following certain types of surgery. Bear in mind that DVT can lead to blood clots in the lungs. It is worth noting that using Dalteparin is not recommended if you have active or uncontrolled bleeding, or if you have a history of blood clot. Besides, this medication may make you bleed more easily, especially if you have an inherited bleeding disorder, or if you had a recent brain or eye surgery. As far as the common side effects are concerned, they include low platelet levels, and swelling at the site where the needle entered the skin. There are, however, more serious side effects that require medical attention such as sudden weakness, trouble breathing, and unusual bleeding. It is not known, though, if Dalteparin is safe during pregnancy, which is why it is very important that you tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you’re planning a pregnancy before using the drug in question.
