Demeclocycline, sold under the brand name “Declomycin”, is a tetracycline antibiotic indicated for the treatment of many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, among others. Bear in mind that you should not use this medicine if you are pregnant as it could harm the fetus or cause permanent tooth discoloration later in life. It is also worth noting that Demeclocycline can compromise the effectiveness of birth control pills, which is why you should ask your doctor if you could use other methods to prevent pregnancy while taking the drug in question. As a matter of fact, Demeclocycline may also affect a nursing baby, considering it passes into breast milk. Therefore, you should not use it during breastfeeding as well. In order to be sure that this medication is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney/ liver disease, or if you are diabetic. Remember that Demeclocycline is typically taken on an empty stomach, preferably one hour before or two hours after a meal. You should not, however, take it with milk, considering dairy products can make it harder for your body to absorb this drug. As for the side effects that require immediate medical care, they include pale skin, confusion, mood swings, nausea, vomiting, and fast heart rate. Vaginal itching and trouble swallowing can also occur, although they’re considered less serious than the previously mentioned ones.
