Ergonovine, which was discovered in 1932, is indicated for the prevention of postpartum bleeding and the one that happens after abortion. It does so by causing “smooth muscle tissue in the blood vessel walls to narrow, thereby reducing blood flow” (Wikipedia.com) Among the things that you need to tell your doctor about before using this medication is if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or toxemia, or if you are taking HIV drugs. You also need to tell them if you are breastfeeding, because apparently you shouldn’t take Ergonovine in this situation. Bear in mind that this drug is usually given as a shot into a muscle, and rarely into a vein. As for its side effects, they include high blood pressure, shortness of breath, blood in the urine, hallucinations, and chest pain. Don’t forget to call your doctor immediately if you have any of these side effects.
