Approved by the FDA in 2014, Peramivir is an antiviral drug that is given as an infusion into a vein. It is used for the treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza in patients 2 years and older who have been symptomatic for no more than two days. Peramivir basically works by preventing an enzyme in the body from releasing virus from infected cells. Remember that you need to tell you doctor, before taking this medication, if you have ever had kidney disease or if you have received a nasal flu vaccine within the past two weeks. You should also get emergency medical help once you start having new or worsening flu symptoms or if you have hallucinations or unusual thoughts after receiving the treatment. Peramivir has other common side effects that also need to be mentioned such as diarrhea, constipation and sleep problems. It is worth noting that there is still limited available data with Peramivir use in pregnant women, making it difficult to determine a drug-associated risk of adverse developmental outcomes.
