Description

Also known as Visudyne, Verteporfin is a benzoporphyrin derivative used as a photo-sensitizer for photodynamic therapy to eliminate the abnormal blood vessels in the eye associated with conditions such as the wet form of macular degeneration. Remember that you should not receive Verteporfin if you are allergic to it, or if you have porphyria (a genetic enzyme disorder that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system). And in order to make sure that this medication is safe for you, you must tell your doctor if you have liver disease, gallbladder disease, or if you are receiving radiation treatment. It is worth noting that the most common side effects of Verteporfin are blurred vision, headache, and local effects at the injection site. Photosensitivity is yet another side effect that can occur, which is why it is advised to avoid exposure to sunlight and unscreened lighting until 48 hours after the injection of this medication. Bear in mind that it is still not known whether Verteporfin will harm an unborn baby. Therefore, you must tell your doctor if you are pregnant while using this medicine.
