Also known as Daikon, White Radish is a mild-flavored winter radish usually characterized by fast-growing leaves and a long, white root. In Japan, many types of pickles are made with white radish. This radish is also frequently used grated and mixed into ponzu, a soy sauce and citrus juice condiment. Simmered dishes are also popular such as oden. White radish that has been shredded and dried is called kiriboshi-daikon. This radish's sprouts are also used for salad or garnishing sashimi. White radish is very low in food energy. A 100-gram serving contains only 18 Calories, but provides a moderate amount of vitamin C. Rich in potassium, radishes in general can help keep blood pressure under control by maintaining the sodium-potassium balance in the body. This anti-hypertensive property is the reason why everybody should have enough radish in winters, when high blood pressure issues get worse, if not taken care of.
