German prunes were grown in Hungary in the sixteenth century, with the dried fruit commercialized into Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. This fruit is generally small to medium in size, long and oval, and has a purplish black skin along with a firm, yellow-green flesh that is moderately juicy and sweet with a mild, pleasant flavor. Nutritionally, a single serving of prunes fulfills the daily requirement for boron, not to mention that the potassium present in prunes helps support bone health. According to Florida State University, prunes may also be able to reverse osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
