Native to Malaysia, Carambolas are curious-looking fruits with a thin, waxy skin and a crisp, juicy flesh. When cut crosswise into slices, the resulting shape is that of a star, hence the American name “Star Fruit”. When ripe, this fruit obtains a honeyed, tropical aroma, as well as sweet-tart tasting notes of plum and grape. Nutrition-wise, carambolas are rich in vitamin C, not to mention that they are also a good source of fiber and vitamins K and A, along with carotenes and B-complex vitamins. Additionally, they contain many beneficial plant compounds that may reduce inflammation, cholesterol, and the risk of fatty liver.
